Multimedia Delivery

MPEG-21 Multimedia Delivery
The Whisper lab has been heavily involved with research into MPEG-21 multimedia delivery, and in particular has performed research into Digital Item Processing and Digital Item Streaming, and Digital Item Adaptation (in particular Session Mobility). This research has led to the filing of 6 patents and substantial parts of the MPEG-21 standard are based on our input contributions.

XML Technologies
As part of our research into multimedia delivery, we have investigated XML compression, protocols and schema techniques, such as those listed on our MPEG-21 research page. We have also developed the Bit stream Binding Language (BBL), which describes a unique mechanism by which XML described content can be bound into and extracted from binary streams.

Peer-to-Peer Media Distribution
Whisper labs has researched peer-to-peer approaches to multimedia distribution and adaptation. The research areas of interest include P2P clustering techniques, media adaptation, media replication strategies and BitTorrent-based P2P systems. A multi-thread based Java P2P simulator has been developed to verify the proposed ideas in these areas. This can simulate hundreds of thousands of peers and media requests.
